![]() ![]() On March 21st, “Johnny Firecloud,” commenting at the site “Antiquiet” on an interview with White from March 20th wrote: Sadly, it seemed like some of these “interpreters” had themselves “given up” on love due to their own relationships/experiences, and thought they were in cynical agreement with Jack White regarding the prospects for “love” in the future. About a third believed that Jack White may have been presenting a negative or cynical view of love, perhaps based on negative past relationships/experiences. More than a few also pointed out the use of irony in the song, so that the statements would be saying the opposite of what they actually mean (although some of these did not specify whether love was ironically bad and therefore good, or ironically good and therefore bad). Interpretations from others in the “public at large.”Ī current survey of the twenty or so “interpretations” of “Love Interruption” at SongMeanings showed that others also saw Jack White’s view of “love” in the song as positive. My overall view of the significance of “love” in the song, was that although “love” is portrayed in ways that first appear as negative in the extreme, “love” is actually a positive force that the singer wants to act upon him in a dominating and transforming manner. Instead I merely present some additional thoughts regarding the song and its composer.Ī review of my interpretation (in brief). So I decided to post them here as a “part 2.” I will not interact in detail with the song or my interpretation again. I did find out a few things of interest, and thought they may be of interest to others. (I was busy with other things and did not even blog any new posts from April through December.) When I posted my interpretation I did not search for other interpretations first, and I had been curious since that time if my interpretation was anywhere near his meaning. I decided recently to try to look into other interpretations offered from the general public, and more importantly to see if I could find any words of explanation from Jack White himself. It has been nearly a year since March 27th, 2012, when I posted my “ interpretation” of the song “Love Interruption” by Jack White.

The finding could explain why a lack of sleep seems to make people more vulnerable to developing such dementias, says Agnès Nadjar of the University of Bordeaux in France. “We already know that sustained microglial activation has been observed in Alzheimer’s and other forms of neurodegeneration,” he says. ![]() This is a more worrying find, says Bellesi excessive microglial activity has been linked to a range of brain disorders. “They are like old pieces of furniture, and so probably need more attention and cleaning,” says Bellesi.īut the team also found that microglial cells were more active after chronic sleep deprivation. Much of the remodelling was of the largest synapses, which are more mature and used more intensively. “We show for the first time that portions of synapses are literally eaten by astrocytes because of sleep loss,” says Bellesi.įor all we know, this may be a good thing. This suggests that sleep loss can trigger astrocytes to start breaking down more of the brain’s connections and their debris. ![]() But astrocytes seemed to be more active in sleep-deprived mice – those that had lost eight hours of sleep showed astrocyte activity in around 8 per cent of their synapses, while the cells were active in 13.5 per cent of the synapses of the chronically sleep-deprived animals. Another type, called a microglial cell, prowls the brain for damaged cells and debris.īellisi’s team found that after an undisturbed sleep, astrocytes appeared to be active in around 6 per cent of the synapses in the brains of the well-rested mice. ![]() One type of glial cell, called an astrocyte, prunes unnecessary synapses in the brain to remodel its wiring. Corporations often use generic forms of communication such as expense forms, business letters, training seminars, and annual shareholders’ meetings. Different communities use different types of genres and thus have different genre repertoires or sets of genres that they routinely enact.6 In academic communities, for example, knowledge production is carried out and documented through the genres of lab reports, grant proposals, conference papers, journal articles, reviews of journal manuscripts, books, and book reviews. If you are a graduate student, you participated in the genre of the personal statement required of graduate-student applications in the U.S., and you may be looking forward to writing your thesis, which is another genre. Weather forecasts, advertisements, instruction manuals, the closing arguments at a criminal trial, travel blogs, websites for presidential candidates, and personal home pages are all genres. Among the genres that are widespread in everyday life are various genres of greetings, farewells, and congratulations. We recognize and participate in multiple genres in our communicative lives. A genre, then, is not simply a set of features that characterizes various rhetorical acts but a set of interdependent features. It is the label for the internal dynamic of the constellation that is formed by the situational, substantive, and stylistic features of the genre.5 Although strategic responses and stylistic choices may appear in isolation in other rhetorical forms, what is distinctive about a genre of rhetoric is the recurrence of the forms together, unified by the same organizing principle. Substantive characteristics are those that constitute the content of the rhetoric, while stylistic characteristics constitute its form.4 The third element of a rhetorical genre, the organizing principle, is the root term or key idea that serves as an umbrella label for the characteristic features of the rhetoric. A genre also contains substantive and stylistic characteristics of the rhetoric-these features constitute the second key element of a generic analysis, and they are the characteristics of the rhetoric chosen by the rhetor to respond to the perceived requirements of particular situations. ![]() Situational requirements, or the perception of conditions in a situation that call for particular kinds of rhetorical responses, constitute the first generic element. and helping to reproduce recurrent situations.”3 If there is a genre of eulogistic discourse, for example, then speeches of eulogy for Eleanor Roosevelt, Mother Teresa, Prince, and soldiers killed in the Iraq War should be similar in major aspects, addressing as they do a similar situation-the death of someone significant or beloved.Ī rhetorical genre is a constellation, fusion, or clustering of three different kinds of elements so that a unique kind of artifact is created. In rhetorical studies, genres are seen as “rhetorical actions based in recurrent situations”2 or “ways of recognizing, responding to. The French word genre “connotes sameness in kind, type, or form”1 and is used to refer to a distinct group, type, class, or category of artifacts that share important characteristics that differentiate it from other groups. The purpose of generic criticism is to understand rhetorical practices, sometimes in different time periods and in different places, by identifying the similarities in rhetorical situations and the rhetoric constructed in response to them. Rather than seeking to discover how one situation affects one particular rhetorical act, the generic critic seeks to discover commonalities in rhetorical patterns across recurring situations. Generic criticism is rooted in the assumption that certain types of situations provoke similar needs and expectations in audiences and thus call for particular kinds of rhetoric. |
